MEMORIALS: Commemoration & Controversy
We want to remember our profound collective experiences, and our commonly shared memories prompt us to create permanent memorials, often as sculptural and architectural structures in public spaces. Yet, what constitutes common memory? Is it forever? And, why do we destroy once important memorials, as we also create new ones? We will address these and many other questions, by exploring some of the most impactful, impressive, and controversial memorials around the world. As we consider their original purposes and challenges, we will also explore our current individual aesthetic experiences of them.
